CD liner notes by Benji.
it wasn’t so long ago that i was laying in the backyard under the stars wondering what this would feel like, what was left of a pretty broken family, we were forced to move out our home and into a little farmhouse in the middle of nowhere maryland. miles from everything – with no car, only a quitar, records we loved and a lot of time to dream. i remember that time in my life so clearly, like it was yesterday. in the winter we passed the cold nights talking about how it would be on tour with our favorite bands. wondering what it was like in california, how everything would get better once we made it. we spent the summers in the backyard writing songs, daydreaming about what it would be once we got here, and here we are. on the eve of one of the proudest times in our life, the chronicles of life and death will leave our hands and into those of the people that we love. a lot has happened in the last few years and this album is our hopes of telling what we’ve learned and hopefully give something back to all of you that have made all this possible. this record is our pledge to remember what music means to all of our lives, that we refuse to forget where we came from and the hope that the bands we loved gave to us. this music has given us all somewhere to go, a place to belong. we are thankful. we continue to grow together as a band, to learn, make mistakes and live. we are thankful to have you all along with us as we do. this all may sound stupid or sentimental – i just don’t know how else to express what is in my heart, if i didn’t tell you how grateful we are for our lives i know i would regret it. beneath all the tattoo’s, the things we’ve done. stupid things we’ve said – perceptions people may have, we are really just 5 kids that feel so lucky to be here. we wrote a list of thank you’s and it turned out longer then we could actually fit in this insert. the truth is each one of you play such a valuable part in our lives. our friends, family, the people we work with, bands we know & love, those who sponsor us and the heart and soul of our music – our fans. we would like to find the perfect words to show how sincerely grateful we are to each one of you and i’m not sure if we ever will. we do hope you can feel it in each of these songs and we always hope to make each of you proud to be a part of good charlotte. every record, every song, every show, you all have given us so much and been so important to our lives. so thanx. it really is our hope to give you all something back thru the sincerity of this music. thank you for standing with us. see you at the show… benji madden
Good charlotte

Biography
Joel Madden: vocals * Benji Madden: guitars, vocals Billy Martin: guitars, keyboards * Paul Thomas: bass * Chris Wilson: drums
After millions got to know The Young and the Hopeless, Good Charlotte is back with a remarkably self-assured and provocative new collection, dubbed The Chronicles of Life and Death. The album - "the Most Anticipated CD of 2004," according to Alternative Press - sees the band growing by remarkable leaps and bounds, offering an increasingly multifaceted musical palette that evinces Joel and Benji Madden's mounting songwriting muscle. As ever, the Maddens open their heads and hearts to confront personal demons and private darkness with striking candor. Songs such as "Predictable" and "The World Is Black" are fuelled by Joel's resolute drive to form a frank and thoughtful lyrical dialogue with his audience, keeping the faith with a loyal fan following that expects no less. With The Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Charlotte exhibit escalating artistic ambition without sacrificing the idiosyncratic spirit, style, and sincerity that made them one of today's most important bands.
"As much growth as there was from our first record to our second record," singer Joel Madden says, "there's so much more on this one. We've become comfortable in our own skin. We have nothing to prove. Once we realized that, it opened a lot of creative doors for us to go other places with our music."
The Waldorf, Maryland-based group formed in 1996, and released their self-titled debut three years later. Non-stop touring saw Good Charlotte refining their sound and vision, developing an ardent fan base stirred by the band's powerful energy and straight-up directness.
The follow up to their debut, The Young and the Hopeless, was released in October 2002. With irresistible anthems like, well, "The Anthem," the album was chock full of raw and thought-provoking songs touching on a wide range of easily relatable topics - family, powerlessness, ubiquitous celebrity, and most significantly, suicide.
Driven by four singles - including "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous," "Boys and Girls," and the unforgettable "Hold On" - The Young and the Hopeless scored 3x-platinum certification from the RIAA, landing the band on Saturday Night Live, the covers of Rolling Stone and Alternative Press, a two page feature in the New York Times and spots on CNN and The Today Show. Good Charlotte were also hugely popular at MTV, where the Madden Brothers once served as hosts All Things Rock. Their video clips were chart-topping favorites on both MTV and MTV2, with "The Anthem" going on to receive 2003's MTV "Viewers Choice" Video Music Award.
With The Young and the Hopeless, Good Charlotte accomplished something far more lasting than mere sales success - they moved and inspired a generation of kids left behind by much of today's popular culture. The fans knew instinctively that no matter how much fame and fortune came their way, the Brothers Madden gave a damn. In Good Charlotte, the fans had a band that they could believe in, a band that warranted their allegiance, a band that would always be honest and true and committed to the ideals that brought them into the spotlight in the first place. That, of course, had been Joel and Benji's dream from Day One - whatever else, Good Charlotte had to be a band that mattered.
With new fans joining the family with each passing day, the inveterate road warriors made a point of touring relentlessly, blowing up stages around the world for a marathon 20 months. Good Charlotte also took the opportunity to engage in a variety of extracurricular activities, including contributed guest vocals to records by Mest and N.E.R.D, continuing their Level 27 and Made clothing labels and launching a toy line. In May 2004, the Maddens launched their own DC Flag Records label, releasing albums by Lola Ray and Hazen Street.
"Our lives have all changed over the last four or five years," Madden says of Good Charlotte's brilliant career thus far. "We've all grown up a lot. It's been an amazing learning experience. And as a band, we're so much closer than ever before."
When the time came to follow up The Young and the Hopeless, Good Charlotte wanted to capture that interpersonal bond and fertile vein of newly accrued knowledge. Their first step was to again enlist the services of producer Eric Valentine, the man behind the board for their previous collection.
The band spent March through August 2004 at Valentine's Barefoot Studios in Los Angeles, laying down almost 30 songs. Having spent nearly two straight years on the road, Good Charlotte entered the studio playing with unprecedented unity and power which included long-time drummer Chris Wilson as an official member of the group. The band knew that one of their goals was to take that heat and incorporate it into a more complex set of songs.
"You get to know yourself on the road," Madden says, "and you know what you're going to be bored playing. We went in thinking, 'Okay, we're going to be playing these songs for the next two years, let's make them as challenging as possible.'"
With that in mind, Good Charlotte was determined to the sonic envelope, veering away from their hook-injected punk to take an edgier, more eclectic approach. Having long been inspired by a wide range of musical heroes - from such like-minded artists as the Smiths and the Cure to modern outfits like British power-prog trio, Muse - tracks such as "Predictable" see the band weaving intricate new textures into their trademark aggro-pop blend of hi-energy hooks and sing-along harmonies.
"This is definitely a rock record," Madden says. "The songwriting is very different from anything we've done before. It's much darker; there are a lot of mid-tempo songs. There's a lot of interesting guitars and keyboards and string sections, really dramatic stuff. It really doesn't sound like 'The Young and the Hopeless,' which is really cool, because it's important to do something different with each record."
The elaborate musical scale reflects and compliments the breadth of lyrical mediations that permeate the collection. Tracks like "World Is Black" and "We Believe" resonate with a poignancy and turbulence fuelled by the Maddens' feelings about themselves and the world around them.
"There's a lot of inner struggle going on in these songs," Madden says. "Instead of 'me against the world,' there's a lot more 'me against myself.' This record is basically about us turning around and facing ourselves. Before, I think we used music to run from things, but we've learned that things just get worse if you let them go. This record is about really confronting who we are and everything that's inside of us."
With The Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Charlotte have indeed crafted something special - an impressively emotional and creative work that affirms the band's intelligence, integrity, and ingenuity while also furthering their unique connection with their steadfast following.
"I've always looked at Outkast as a group that I wanted to model Good Charlotte after," Madden says. "They're comfortable being themselves and they've never been afraid to take their music wherever they want to go. People are always lumping us in with the whole pop-punk thing. Well, if we're going to be a pop-punk band, then I want us to be the Outkast of pop-punk.
"The fact is, we're so happy with where we're at," he concludes. "We can take Good Charlotte wherever we want to go and I'm comfortable that our fans are going to grow with us. As long as we're being honest - that's all our fans want, and we're definitely going to continue doing that. Just being ourselves, being honest, doing what we do."

This fall, concertgoers can get a double dose of the rock when Sum 41 and Good Charlotte hit the road together.
The co-headlining tour kicks off October 21 in Seattle, according to the bands' publicists. A dozen shows are confirmed so far, with additional dates expected to run through the end of November. Tickets go on sale beginning Friday.
Hazen Street, the first signing to Benji and Joel Madden's D.C. Flag imprint, will serve as openers (see "Hazen Street: Pop Punks And The Guys They Worship Make Music Together"). The band's self-titled debut dropped in July.
Good Charlotte and Sum 41 will each hit the road on the heels of new albums: The Chronicles of Life and Death and Chuck, respectively. Good Charlotte are actually releasing two versions of their third album on October 5 (see "Good Charlotte Get Serious With The Chronicles of Life And Death"). The Life version contains the bonus track "Falling Away," an optimistic rave-up, while the Death version finds fatalistic "Meet My Maker" tacked onto the standard album's 15 tracks. Guitarist Billy Martin, the band's resident artist, created the cover art for both versions.
"The CD is laid out like an old storybook, where the lyrics sort of tell the story and the illustrations go along with each song," Martin explained. "The art on the cover of the Life CD represents more of a new book, like a book when it first gets printed. And the death one looks like the book is 100 years old and it's falling apart and it's getting ready for the end of its time."
Both "books" won't be around forever. Eventually, one of the versions will disappear from store shelves, making it something of a limited-edition collector's item.
"I love when bands come out and do the special editions and multiple album covers," Martin said. "You don't get to put a record out that much, so we wanted to do something cool."
As for Sum 41, their latest, Chuck, named for the U.N. peacekeeper who may have saved their lives on a humanitarian visit to the Congo earlier this year (see "Sum 41 Name Album After The Man Who Saved Their Lives"), will drop October 12. Its first single, "We're All to Blame," is beginning to heat up radio playlists, and a video surfaced this week.
A classic hardcore flurry opens the song, which focuses on the world's problems and points the finger at our own personal greed. "We've gone from pride to shame," frontman Deryck Whibley sings before dropping buzzword-laden phrases like "Supersize our tragedy" and "We live in a culture of fear." Despite the matured, socially responsible themes in the single, Sum 41 haven't lost their trademark sense of humor. The "Solid Gold" dancers — from the glitzy, overwrought lip-synch performance show of the 1980s — in the video kind of give that away pretty quickly.
"The video is pretty funny," Whibley said. "There are so many sides to our band. We try to be aware of things and we have kind of a message in some of our songs, but we're still a humorous band, and we like to have fun in our videos and do something creative. So in this video we're playing on 'Solid Gold.' The whole stage is set up the same. We really don't have to do much except play; the dancers do all the work."

Good Charlotte Takes on KFC
After finding out that Col. Sanders' secret recipe is really cruelty to animals, members of Good Charlotte joined their fellow tour-mates and PETA pals Goldfinger in a series of demos at KFCs across the country to spread the word and urge the public to boycott KFC.
The boys wanted everyone to know that before these smart, sensitive, friendly birds are battered and sold by the bucketful, they are crammed into sheds that reek of ammonia and crap, with tens of thousands of other chickens. They often suffer broken bones because workers carelessly grab them by their legs and cram them into crates before shipping them off to the slaughterhouse. Many chickens are still fully conscious when their throats are slit or when they're dunked into tanks of scalding hot water to remove their feathers. This is the fate of more than 700 million chickens who are killed by KFC every year.
Oh, and during that same tour, we got the inside scoop on what their favorite foods were from John Feldmann. John knew the skinny because his wife, Amy, was often doing the cooking for Good Charlotte and Goldfinger. The list included Tofutti frozen pizzas, Boca Burgers, Starbucks soy lattes, and Gardenburger Riblets, and their favorite tour breakfast food was Amy's homemade waffles.
This isn't the first time that members of Good Charlotte have lent their support to help animals. They contributed a track to PETA's Liberation CD, along with fellow animal advocates Goldfinger, The Used, Midtown, NOFX, Story of the Year, Anti-Flag, Propaghandi, The Desaparecidos, Good Riddance, Hot Water Music … the list is never-ending. For the full story, check out Liberation-Songs to Benefit PETA.
We met up with Billy, who's an outspoken vegetarian, at the Warped Tour in 2002, and he explained to us why he's veg and why you should be, too. Check out Billy's interview here. Billy also recorded a message for you to download and use as your very own answering-machine or voice-mail message-so download it here today.

Here is some lyrics from Good Charlotte's new cd "The chronicles of life and death"..OMg these leyrics are so awesome!! great job guys!!!:
Good Charlotte "Ghost Of You"
i will wait until the end when the pendulum will swing back to the darker side of our hearts bleeding i will save this empty space next to me like it's a grave where i lay a place for us to sleep eternally together i have been searching for traces of what we were a ghost of you is all that i have left it's all that i have left of you to hold i wake in the night to find there's no one there but me and nothing left of what we were at all so here i am pacing around this house again with pictures of us living on these walls i see my breath in the cold of the air that i breathe and i'm wondering i'm wondering if it's you that i feel if it's you that i feel here haunting me forever i have been searching for traces of what we were a ghost of you is all that i have left it's all that i have left of you to hold i wake in the night to find there's no one there but me and nothing left of what we were at all and i'm not looking for anything but us anything but what we were and i'm not asking for painted memories i only want to know you're here a ghost of you is all that i have left it's all that i have left of you to hold i wake in the night to find there's no one there but me and nothing left of what we were at all a ghost of you is all that i have left it's all that i have left of you to hold i wake in the night to find there's no one there but me and nothing left of what we were at all
"The World Is Black"
Turn on channel seven at a quarter to eight You see the same damn thing it's just a different day and No one really knows why this is happening But it's happening And everywhere you go it's just a different place You get the same dark feeling See the same sad faces No one really cares that this is happening
We come into this world And we all are the same In that moment there's no one to blame
But the world is black And hearts are cold And there's no hope That's what we're told And we can't go back It won't be the same Forever changed By the things we say, say
Living in this place it's always been this way There's no one doing nothing so there's nothing changed And I can't live when this world just keeps dying It's dying People always tell me this is part of the plan That God's got everybody in his hands But I can only pray that God is listening Is he listening?
We're living in this world Growing colder everyday Nothing can stay perfect now I say
But the world is black And hearts are cold And there's no hope That's what we're told And we can't go back It won't be the same Forever changed By the things we say, say, say
We come into this world And we all are the same And in that moment there's no one to blame But we're living in this world Growing colder everyday Nothing can stay perfect now I say
The world is black And hearts are cold There's no hope That's what we're told And we can't go back (We can't go back) It won't be the same (It won't be the same) Forever changed (What will ever change) By the things we say, say, say
Turn on channel seven at a quarter to eight You see the same damn thing it's just a different day And no one really knows why this is happening
"S.O.S."
Is anybody listening? Can they hear me when I call? I'm shooting signals in the air 'Cause I need somebody's help I can't make it on my own So I'm giving up myself Is anybody listening? Listening
I'll be standing here and I'm miles away Making signals hoping they'd save me I lock myself inside these walls 'Cause out there I'm always wrong I don't think I'm gonna make it So while I'm sitting here On the eve of my death bed I'll write this letter and hope it saves me
Is anybody listening? Can they hear me when I call? Should I take notes in the end? 'Cause I need somebody's help I can't make it on my own So I'm giving up myself Is anybody listening? Listening
I'm stuck in my own head and I'm oceans away Would anybody notice if I chose to stay? I'll send and SOS tonight Wonder if I will survive How in the hell did I get so far away this time So now I'm sitting here The time of my departure's near I say a prayer Please someone save me
Is anybody listening? Can they hear me when I call? Should I take notes in the end? 'Cause I need somebody's help I can't make it on my own So I'm giving up myself Is anybody listening? Listening
I'm lost here I can't make it on my own I don't wanna die alone I'm so scared Drowning now Reaching out Holding on to everything I love Crying out Dying now Need some help
Is anybody listening? Can you hear me when I call? Shooting signals in the air I need somebody's help I can't make it on my own So I'm giving up myself Is anybody listening?
"We Believe"
There's a woman crying out tonight Her world has changed She asks God why Her only son has died And now her daughter cries She can't sleep at night
Downtown Another day for all the suits and ties Another war to fight There's no regard for life How do they sleep at night How can we make things right? Just wanna make this right
We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe In this love
We are all the same Human in all our ways and all of pain (So let it be) There's a love that could fall down like rain (Let us see) Let forgiveness wash away the pain (What we need) And no one really knows what they are searching for (We believe) This world is crying for so much more
We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe In this love
We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe In this love
So this world Is too much For you to take Just lay it down in front of me I'll be everything you need In every way
We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe We believe In this love (In this love) We believe (In this love) We believe (In this love) We believe (In this love)
Good Charlotte "Falling Away"
lost and broken , hopeless and lonely smiling on the outside, hurt beneath my skin my eyes are fading, my soul is bleeding i'll try to make it seem ok but my faith is wearing thin so help me heal these wounds they've been open for way too long help me fill this soul even though this is not your fault but i'm open and i'm bleeding all over your brand new rug and i need someone to help me sow them up i only wanted a magazine, i only wanted a movie screen i only wanted the life i'd read and dreamed and now my mind is an open book and my heart is an open wound and now my life is open, it's open for all to see but help me heal these wounds, they've been open for way too long help me fill this soul even though this is not your fault that i'm open and i'm bleeding all over your brand new rug and i need someone to help me so you come along, i push you away then kick and scream for you to stay cos i need someone to help me oh i need someone to help me to help me heal these wounds they've been open for way too long help me fill this soul even though this is not your fault that i'm open and i'm bleeding all over your brand new rug and i need someone to help me sow them, i need someone to help me fill them, i need someone to help me close them up
Good Charlotte :Just Wanna Live
I need a law system in my house So I know people are creeping about These people are freaking me out
It's getting hectic everywhere that I go They wont leave me alone There's things they all wanna know
I'm paranoid by all the people I meet And why are they talking to me? And why Can't anyone see?
I just wanna live Don't really care about the things that they say Don't really care about what I must obey I just wanna live
Stop harrassing the mail boy Better think of your futures Better make some good plans
Or send everyone of my terachers Look out, Better play it safe You never know what hearts you are gonna win Be safe, everytime i rock with the chorus singing the words ...?
Now we're inspected everywhere that we go All the things that they say Yeah we already know
I just wanna live Don't really care about the things that they say Don't really care about what I must obey I just wanna live
The Chronicles of Life and Death By: Good Charlotte
You come in cold, You're covered in blood, They're all so happy you've arrived. The docter cuts your cord he hands it to your mom, He sets you free into this life. And where do you go, With no destination, No maps to guide you. Wouldnt you know that it doesnt matter, We all end up the same.
These are the chronicles of life and death and everything between. These are the stories of our lives as fictional as they may seem. You come in this world, and you go out just the same. Today could be the best day of your life.
And you'll find out, that in this world, We're all just rats caught in a race. But take your time, theres no need to rush, You dont have to live that way. Before you go, you've got some questions, that you want answers. But now you're old, cold covered in blood, right back to where you started from.
These are the chronicles of life and death and everything between. These are the stories of our lives as fictional as they may seem. You come in this world, and you go out just the same. Today could be the worst day of your life, of your life, it's your life.
But these are the chronicles of life and death and everything between. These are the stories of our lives as fictional as they may seem. You come in this world, and you go out just the same. Today could be the best day of, Today could be the worst day of, Today could be the last day of your life, its your life, your life.

(pic of joel with headphones) Sound OFF "You're always a little nervous of what people think of your music. We put so much work into [The Chronicles of Life and Death, October 5]. It took almost six months to record-we're hoping all of our fans like it."
(the one with the car) Family Affair "That's my manager, Steve [left], who was at the studio listening to the record, and my homeboy Super Nik. He's been our friend [since we were growing up]. He works at MADE [ the guys' clothing and car accessories company]. Good Charlotte is like family."
(benji alone) Reading is Fundamental Benji-chilling here- believes every band wannabe should read All You Need to Know About the Music Business, by Donald S. Passman. Joel: "Learn it and live it. If you don't know something [about you desired career], there's always books at Barnes and Noble; I read that book for free, before i had money. I would be in the bookstore all day. There's books on writing screenplays, writing songs, producing movies-it's all there."
(Joel eating) What's COoking? "I pack my own lunches. I made that spaghetti. Every day I bring my lunch. I don't like spending money on food when i'm not on the road. I'm kind of old-school like that."
(group) The Dream Team "Before, it was mostly me and benji writing the songs and then we'd get together with the band and make the album. But everyone contributed this time, which makes it special....There are no rules in Good CHarlotte-if anyone wants to do something, they have complete freedom to do it."
(Joel on comp) Web World "I'm chatting online here. I chat with my friends and people that i work with. I also read the good charlotte message board all the time. But you know what? Every time I post, they always say it's not me. I've tried to be like, 'Hey, it's Joel, I just wanna say hi and say thank you guys for posting.' but the fans are always like, "thats not you!"
(under where it says "a day with good charlotte) in the band's first diary, joel madden spills on the lifestyle of a rich and famous punk rocker, including what he chats about online and what it takes to make GC's new disc!
